While many people think about turkeys in the fall, Maine has a spring turkey hunt as well. This Saturday, April 27, is youth day for the Maine spring wild turkey hunting season. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says last year, 457 youth day hunters registered turkeys. "The biggest win is that hundreds of members of the next generation spent quality time outdoors making memories and learning about wildlife, safety, ethics, conservation, and respectful use of private land. We hope to see the same enthusiasm for the Maine outdoors this year from both our youth and their mentors. Best of luck, stay safe, and have fun!" said department officials in a post on Facebook. The spring turkey season opens to all hunters on Monday, April 29. The spring and fall wild turkey hunting seasons are open to all hunters with valid big or small game hunting licenses (firearms or archery). A combination spring/fall wild turkey permit is also required and available for $20, plus agent fee. Junior hunters and Maine resident lifetime license holders over the age of 70 are exempt from the $20 permit fee. Wild turkeys are most common in the southern and central parts of the State, and less common in the northern parts but can be found in every Wildlife Management District (WMD) in the state.
