DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WEVV) — Kentucky State Police say a former Owensboro Police officer was indicted Tuesday after a recent 2023 investigation.

KSP says the Daviess County Grand Jury indicted 35-year-old Aleph Zavala of Owensboro for Sodomy, 1st Degree, Strangulation 1st Degree, and Sexual Abuse, 1st Degree.

Kentucky State Police troopers say they launched the investigation on December 9th, 2023 after allegation of sexual misconduct was reported involving an on-duty Owensboro Police Officer.

KSP says the complaint began when OPD received a burglary alarm at U-Haul Storage along West Parrish Avenue.

KSP says officers discovered a homeless woman residing in one of the units, who had permission from the business owner.

Authorities say after officers left the scene, the woman alleged Zavala returned where he sexually assaulted her.

Kentucky State Police say Zavala was arrested and booked in the Daviess County Detention Center on a $100,000 full cash bond.

KSP says the investigation in on-going.

As we previously reported, Zavala was terminated from the department in February at the recommendation of the Chief of Police.
